Brazil’s long pursuit of Carlo Ancelotti carried exactly that kind of hope: a great coach, a great football nation, and the belief that one appointment could restore order.
But leadership rarely works that simply. Brazil’s early World Cup exit raises a deeper question than whether Ancelotti is a good coach. He clearly is, as we argue in our book. The more important question is whether Brazil mistook reputation for renewal.
Waiting years for the right name can feel strategic. But is it wise? It can also leave an organisation standing still while the squad grows older, the next generation waits, and the team’s identity becomes increasingly unclear.
The best football organisations do not only recruit leaders. They build the conditions in which leadership can work. So, has Brazil failed to do that? And will they now take the easy way out by dismissing Ancelotti?
I really hope not. Let him build the culture. He is one of the world’s finest coaches. Great coaches need time, trust and a culture strong enough to let their leadership work.
